Geographic Information Systems
Overview
This academic program provides a pathway of courses and academic opportunities for students to acquire skills to be proficient in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). GIS is a powerful tool for multiple real-world applications in professional and academic disciplines. Employers and graduate schools are eager to recruit students with a solid background in GIS analysis, particularly those students with certification of proficiency. The pathway will provide students with the necessary skills to obtain an NCF GIS Certificate. Additionally, this certificate will cover the needed content for students to take an online exam offered by the Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri). Esri is an internationally recognized company that produces ArcGIS, one of the best GIS software systems. ArcGIS, as well as Esri's certifications, are used extensively and are recognized by state, local, and federal government offices, conservation groups, academic institutions, and private companies. Students successfully finishing the NCF GIS Certificate can take one or more of Esri's online certification tests.
To obtain a GIS Certificate at New College of Florida, students follow a recommended sequence of courses. The path must be started no later than one academic year prior to the student’s intended graduation date, to guarantee that all required and elective courses and activities are completed. Individual AOC requirements, prerequisite course requirements, credit load, and course availability may affect a student’s individual progress. Students must pass all the required courses, and take at least one elective course and one GIS-related activity. Students should contact GIS faculty members to better understand typical course availability and individual program planning; however, they should always consult the online catalog for specific class information. Students successfully finishing the NCF GIS Certificate coursework can apply to be sponsored by New College to take one or more external online GIS certificates issued by Esri or an equivalent organization.
